PROJECT: WHEN THE LANDSCAPE PUTS US IN OUR PLACE

Have you ever felt scared in the woods? Walking by yourself, unable to own the landscape and take it in with a gaze, things may lose their familiarity. Anything might happen.

‘I fear not spirits, ghosts...but I fear bodies, I tremble to meet them...Talk of mysteries! – Think of our life in nature, - daily to be shown matter, to come in contact with it, - rocks, trees, wind on our cheeks!...Who are we? Where are we?’1

Sometimes it is okay to cultivate self-doubt.  Scarlet Pimpernel-like, you can go under cover.  Let slide the things that frame and define you – a hat, a notebook a map? Join the vast unknown and hide away for a while!

PROJECT: WHEN THE LANDSCAPE PUTS US IN OUR PLACE

  1. Make a tall turned-down collar that grazes your ears and will unfold upwards to cover your eyes
  2. First take a sheet of 160g A2 paper (or a sheet of paper that is a little longer than the circumference of your head)
  3. Fold the paper concertina style along its length into 3 sections
  4. Shape the outer edge to suggest the curve of a collar
  5. Fit around your neck and secure with a stud
  6. Cut the upper surface of the collar into 5 sections in mimicry of the little Scarlet Pimpernel’s petals
  7. This will allow the collar to unfold and be worn over the eyes in moments of uncertainty

May you collar a tight hold on good luck and nought af-front you through the wood
